Trekking poles, Trail running poles or Nordic Walking poles: what’s the difference?

 

Not all poles are the same. Even though Trekking poles, Trail running poles and Nordic walking poles Although they may look similar at first glance, they have been designed for completely different types of movement, loads and areas of use. If you choose the wrong pole, you’re not only sacrificing comfort and efficiency, but often control and enjoyment as well.

TREKKING POLES: THE ALL-ROUNDER FOR OFF-ROAD TERRAIN


Hiking poles
are sturdy companions for hikes, multi-day tours and alpine terrain. They are usually made of Aluminum / Aluminium, Carbon or a carbon-Aluminum alloy and, depending on the model, telescopic or foldable. They have larger, ergonomic grips, such as the Aergon, Aergon Air or Verticon, and are often fitted with interchangeable baskets that allow them to be used in both summer and winter.

Trekking poles are designed for stability, control and versatility. They provide support on the ascent, take the strain off your knees on the descent and give you control on technical terrain.

 

TRAIL RUNNING POLES: LIGHT, FAST, EFFICIENT


Trail running poles are consistently optimised for speed and light weight. They are usually made of Carbon, making them extremely light, and their foldable design means they can be stowed away very compactly. The Grip is minimalist and, depending on preference, is available with or without the Trigger Shark System, which, when clicked into place, provides a direct connection and power transmission between the hand and the pole.

Every second and every gram counts here. Trail running poles are designed to support dynamic movement without slowing you down. They offer maximum efficiency with minimum weight.

NORDIC WALKING POLES: FOR TECHNIQUE & HEALTH


Nordic walking poles are specially designed for a completely different type of movement: the diagonal whole-body gait on level ground. They either have a fixed length or are light adjustable  s are always fitted with a Trigger Shark system for clicking in. This creates a direct connection and power transmission between the hand and the pole.

Narrow, lightweight tips are used for tarmac and paths. Optionally, rubber buffer or a Smart Tip, which combines a Tip and a pad, for greater flexibility on different surfaces.

Nordic Walking poles are part of a training programme. They engage the upper body, improve posture and build stamina, and are specifically designed for continuous, rhythmic movement on level ground.
